The rule of thirds is a crucial, and extremely effective part of photojournalism, and one that needs to be followed at all times.


The rule of thirds uses the grid feature when taking photos. The grid is made up of horizontal and vertical lines, and usually creates 9 boxes in a picture (Caple, 2013).


The rule of thirds creates hotspots in pictures. These hotspots are located at the intersection of the vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines, while being away from the center of the image frame (Caple, 2013).


If an element is placed around these hotspots, it creates a more balanced image (Caple, 2013).
